John Baldessari
John Baldessari is an American artist known for his work featuring 'wrong photography' and other appropriated images. Baldessari was initially a painter, but then began to incorporate texts and photography into his art pieces. He also began teaching art for nearly 3 decades in schools, colleges and eventually universities.
This photo shows Baldessari's artistic side to his photography. He replaces the faces of the people for faces of colour. He uses block colours which transforms it into a silhouette. He keeps the bright colours of the people- the blue shirt and the blonde hair as well as the red apple that is used. He also adds some black and white effect to create a really unique style to the photo, adding contrast to the picture.

Baldessari again uses colour to cover the faces, again transforming it to a silhouette. He uses contrasting colours, purple and green, with a yellow background to make the colours stand out more. He adds a unique twist, by leaving out the ear, nose and both pieces of head wear. He also changes the view of it being more of a picture frame instead of a photograph. |
Baldessari blocks the faces with a block colour circle focusing the attention on the colours as well as what is happening around the circles, again showing his unique style he creates throughout his art. |
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer. His work focuses on transience of life and the conflict between life and death.
Hiroshi Sugimoto adds a black and white edit to his photos to show a eerier view of the photographs. He took this photo at a forest as it is a more scarier place than usual, bringing it more of a dull, dark vibe. The closer tree is more focused to balance out the other trees in the background.
|
Sugimoto concentrates the photo more on wildlife as well as nature. The photograph is shot on a field and has a black and white edit, again creating an eerie atmosphere. It focuses on the wildlife leaving the hills and trees in the background. The effect (black and white) creates a ashy, grey background that also hides some hills in the back.
|
Sugimoto uses black and white effect with a variety of contrast. In some areas of the photo there are high contrasts whereas in other areas he presents a lower contrast. He again concentrates his photo on wildlife and nature by taking pictures with turtles and lots of other plants as well as the sky and sea.

My photographs in the style of Hiroshi Sugimoto:
These are the photos I took in the style of Hiroshi Sugimoto. In the photos I took, I found an area that I thought would be suitable to take a photo that would be decent enough to be inspired by Sugimoto's style. I used a black and white edit on all my pictures, inspired by Sugimoto's effect he uses. I also shot two of my photos based on plants as Sugimoto introduces the idea of nature in his photos.
